<UNKNOWN>
Anonymous creator of Bitcoin who disappeared in 2011 after inventing cryptocurrency. Identity remains unknown. Estimated to hold $50-70B in BTC that's never been touched. Greatest magic trick in tech: build a trillion-dollar market, then vanish.
Hal was a legendary cryptographer who lived a few blocks from a guy named Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto (awkward coincidence). He received the first Bitcoin transaction and was one of the ONLY people actively helping Satoshi in the early days. He found bugs, suggested improvements, and ran a node when the network was like 2 computers. Without Hal, Bitcoin might've died in its crib. Some people think Hal WAS Satoshi, but he denied it until his death from ALS in 2014.

Gavin started contributing to Bitcoin's code in 2010. Satoshi literally handed him the keys to the kingdom - gave him control of the GitHub repository, the Bitcoin Alert key, and basically said 'you're in charge now' before disappearing. This transfer of power in April 2011 was crucial. Without someone trustworthy to hand off to, the project could've collapsed when Satoshi left.

Martti was one of the first people to contribute code to Bitcoin. He helped Satoshi with development from 2009-2010, including building the UI and setting up Bitcoin.org. For a while, it was basically just Satoshi and Martti building the whole thing. He was also one of the first people Satoshi trusted with commit access to the codebase.

Adam Back invented Hashcash in 1997, which Satoshi used as the basis for Bitcoin's mining algorithm. Satoshi even cited Back's work in the Bitcoin whitepaper. Here's the wild part: Satoshi emailed Adam about Bitcoin in 2008, but Adam barely paid attention to it at first. He thought it was interesting but didn't realize it would actually WORK. Some people suspect Adam might BE Satoshi, but there's no solid evidence.

Wei Dai proposed 'b-money' in 1998, a theoretical digital currency that influenced Satoshi's design. Satoshi cited b-money in the Bitcoin whitepaper and emailed Wei Dai about Bitcoin. Wei Dai didn't get heavily involved, but his ideas about decentralized currency were foundational to what Satoshi built.
